Prostatitis

What is Prostatitis?

Prostatitis is an inflammation of the prostate gland, which is a small, walnut-shaped gland located just below the bladder in men. It can cause testicular pain, abdominal discomfort, and other symptoms.

4 Types of Prostatitis

There are several different types of prostatitis, each with its own set of causes and symptoms:

  • Acute bacterial prostatitis
  • Chronic bacterial prostatitis
  • Chronic nonbacterial prostatitis (chronic pelvic pain syndrome)
  • Asymptomatic inflammatory prostatitis

Acute Bacterial Prostatitis?

Acute bacterial prostatitis is caused by a bacterial infection and it is the most severe type of prostatitis.

It presents with symptoms such as fever, chills, pain in the lower back, pelvis, or genitals, and difficulty urinating.

Chronic Bacterial Prostatitis?

Chronic bacterial prostatitis is a recurring or persistent infection of the prostate that is caused by bacteria.

It usually presents with similar symptoms as acute bacterial prostatitis but the symptoms are milder and less severe.

Chronic Bacterial Prostatitis?

Chronic bacterial prostatitis is a recurring or persistent infection of the prostate that is caused by bacteria.

It usually presents with similar symptoms as acute bacterial prostatitis but the symptoms are milder and less severe.

Chronic Nonbacterial Prostatitis?

Chronic nonbacterial prostatitis (also known as chronic pelvic pain syndrome) is the most common type of prostatitis.

It is characterized by pain or discomfort in the pelvic area, pain or discomfort during ejaculation, and difficulty urinating. The cause of this type of prostatitis is not well understood, but it's thought to be related to muscle spasms or inflammation in the prostate or surrounding area.

How is Prostatitis treated?

Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medications, alpha-blockers and pain medications. In some cases, physical therapy or a combination of treatments may be recommended.

Prostatitis can have similar symptoms to other conditions like urinary tract infections (UTIs), sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and other conditions of the urinary system. Please talk to a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and if necessary, for proper management.

Is Prostatitis cancer?

No. Prostatitis is a benign ailment, and while it's not always curable, it is almost always treatable with antibiotics. Occasionally, inflammation due to prostatitis can raise your PSA level (prostate-specific antigen).

Prostate cancer is believed to be due to a combination of factors including diet, lifestyle, genetics, and environmental exposures. There is, however, a question as to whether continued inflammation of the prostate may lead to the eventual development of prostate cancer, and studies are being done to determine if reducing inflammation can prevent prostate cancer.
